ADMISSION AND ENROLLMENT PROCEDURES
East Tampa Academy complies with all federal and state statutes regarding student admissions and enrollment for charter schools.
OPEN ENROLLMENT PERIOD FOR NEW STUDENTS
Annually, the Open Enrollment period will begin in January and close in April. Dates will be posted in advance on the school website.
Currently enrolled students do NOT participate in Open Enrollment. They are guaranteed a seat for the upcoming school year when the parent submits their Intent to Return form. The Intent to Return form is due Friday, April 2, 2021.
During the Open Enrollment period, all eligible students who submit an admission application during the designated period will have an equal opportunity to be admitted, regardless of whether the application is submitted on the first day or the last day of Open Enrollment.
At the close of the Open Enrollment period, if the number of applicants exceeds the number of available seats for any grade level, all eligible students who have submitted a timely application will have an equal opportunity to be selected for enrollment through a random lottery process, by grade level.
If the number of students who apply during the Open Enrollment period is less than the number of spaces available, by grade level, no lottery will be held.
Enrollment will continue until the number of students reaches grade level capacity. Students who submit an application after capacity is reached will be placed on the wait list in the order in which their application is received. All applications are time and date stamped.
As a current recipient of the federal Charter Schools Program Grant, East Tampa Academy may establish additional application periods with clear beginning and ending dates, and additional lotteries may be conducted as necessary.
LOTTERY RULES AND PROCEDURES
If the number of applicants exceeds the number of spaces available for any grade level, all eligible students who submit an admission application during the Open Enrollment period will have an equal opportunity to be selected through a random lottery by grade level. The East Tampa Academy lottery is held in April. The date and time will be posted on our website. The lottery is open to the public. [20 U.S.C. 7221i(1)(H); s. 1002.33(10)(b), F.S.]
If a lottery is required, families will begin to be notified of the lottery results by email in June 2021.
Students who are not selected for admission through the random lottery process will be placed on a waitlist in the order in which their names were drawn.
Important: Submitting an admission application may not guarantee enrollment to the school. If the number of applicants exceeds the number of available spaces for any grade level, a random lottery must be held to determine the students who will be invited to enroll for the upcoming school year.
ENROLLMENT OFFER FOLLOWING THE LOTTERY
Any parent who is offered a seat will have five (5) business days, starting from the date the offer is made, to respond. Parents will confirm their intentions by accepting or declining the offer. If the applicant fails to respond to the offer within five (5) business days, the school must contact the next applicant on the waitlist.
Any student who is not selected during the lottery will be placed on a waitlist in the order in which his/her name is drawn.
Any student who submits an application after the Open Enrollment period closes or if all grade levels are at capacity will be placed on the waitlist in the order in which his/her application is received. All applications are date and time stamped.
If an opening becomes available during the summer or after the school year begins, enrollment will continue from the waitlist. East Tampa Academy will contact the first family on the waitlist by phone and email. Families will have 48 hours to accept the offer to enroll. After that time, we must contact the next family on the waitlist.
Waitlists from a prior year carry over to a subsequent year.
During the 2020-21 and 2021-22 school years, as a recipient of the federal Charter Schools Program Grant, East Tampa Academy follows the U.S. Department of Education’s guidance on enrollment preference.
Enrollment preference may be given to the following students:
- Students currently enrolled at East Tampa Academy are not required to reapply for the following school year and are exempt from a lottery.
- Siblings of students already attending or admitted to East Tampa Academy.
- Children of teachers and staff, so long as the total number of students allowed under this exemption constitute a small percentage of the school’s total enrollment.
- Children of the school’s founders, so long as the total number of students allowed under this exemption constitute a small percentage of the school’s total enrollment.
Under the federal Charter Schools Program Grant, we cannot provide enrollment preference to our active military families.

Enrollment Preference Beginning with the 2021-2022 School Year
In accordance with s. 1002.33(10), Florida Statutes, effective with the Open Enrollment period beginning January 2021 for the 2021-2022 school year, East Tampa Academy will give enrollment preference to the following student populations:
- Student who are currently enrolled at East Tampa Academy are not required to reapply for the following school year and are exempt from a lottery.
- Students who are siblings of a student enrolled in the school.
- Students who are the children of an employee of the school.
- Students who are the children of a member of the governing board of the school.
- Students who are the children of an active duty member of any branch of the United States Armed Forces.
- Students who have successfully completed a voluntary prekindergarten education program under ss. 1002.51- 1002.79, Florida Statutes provided by the charter school or the charter school’s governing board during the previous year.
CONTROLLED OPEN ENROLLMENT
In accordance with s. 1002.31(2)(b), Florida Statute, a child who resides outside the Hillsborough County that is not subject to a current expulsion or suspension may enroll at East Tampa Academy if the school has not reached capacity. East Tampa Academy provides preferential enrollment under its Controlled Open Enrollment Plan to students who reside in Hillsborough County.
